Job Overview:
A law firm is recruiting for a Life Sciences Patent Agent with 2+ years of experience to join a prominent Intellectual Property practice. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in biomedical engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, DNA sequencing, immunology, physics, material science, or related life sciences technologies, with an advanced degree preferred. The position requires strong experience in patent prosecution and familiarity with patent portfolio analysis, due diligence, and other IP transactional matters. While experience in PTAB proceedings is not required, it is a plus. Candidates must have a distinguished academic record and be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The position is available in multiple office locations, with hybrid work options.

Location:

  • Houston, TX

Duties:

  • Draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Prepare responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices regarding scientific matters.
  • Discuss inventions with clients and inventors, then report findings to attorneys.
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office (PTO) throughout the patent application process.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions and advise attorneys as needed.
  • Draft, organize, analyze, review, and summarize documents.
  • Conduct regulatory and factual research to support patent filings.
  • Communicate with clients, vendors, and PTO personnel via email, phone, and in-person.
  • Coordinate workflow with external service providers.
  • Prioritize and complete multiple tasks efficiently under time constraints.
  • Identify and resolve complex patent-related issues.
  • Interact professionally with clients, attorneys, and colleagues at all levels while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Guide legal support staff as necessary on patent-related matters.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and make recommendations for technology needs.
  • Pursue continuing education to stay informed on patent prosecution trends and maintain relevant accreditation.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience in patent prosecution, particularly in life sciences.
  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, biomedical engineering, or a related field (advanced degrees preferred).
  • Licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is preferred.
  • Strong ability to analyze research findings, interpret data, and prepare detailed reports.
  • Ability to provide leadership and operational guidance to technical staff.
  • Excellent investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Expertise in drafting complex patent documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in recordkeeping systems and maintaining detailed documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in the life sciences field.
  • Proficient in using various software tools and office equipment.
  • Ability to travel locally and out of town as necessary.
  • Flexibility to work overtime during peak periods.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in a relevant field preferred.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration is preferred.
  • Continuing education in patent law and life sciences is required to maintain relevant accreditation.
