Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent in Costa Mesa, CA, to join its Intellectual Property Practice Group. The role involves preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The position offers a hybrid in-office/remote working schedule and requires collaboration with partners to provide high-quality legal services to domestic and foreign clients.

Duties

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO.
  • Perform prior art searches and patentability analysis.
  • Conduct IP due diligence and engage in practice development activities.
  • Prepare substantive client correspondence.
  • Instruct local counsel for foreign filings and Office Actions.
  • Assist in patent clearance studies and other patent-related opinion projects.
  • Apply advanced concepts in life sciences, particularly in molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry.
  • Study and analyze scientific or technical documents to assess patentability, novelty, and inventiveness.
  • Convert prior provisional applications into utility applications.
  • Convert foreign filed applications into U.S. applications and vice versa.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience as a practicing patent agent in life sciences or two years of professional experience in life sciences.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Excellent writing and research abilities, proficiency in communication, and strong organizational skills.

Education

  • An advanced degree (master's or PhD) in a biological field such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, or Biomedical Engineering with excellent academic credentials.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
