Job Overview

A law firm seeks a workers' compensation defense attorney for its offices in Roanoke, VA or Bristol, TN. The position offers a growth-oriented opportunity to manage all phases of litigation in workers' compensation matters.

Duties

  • Represent employers and insurance carriers in workers' compensation litigation from case inception through resolution.
  • Draft pleadings, discovery, motions, and briefs.
  • Manage mediations and conduct depositions of claimants, witnesses, and medical experts.
  • Prepare for and appear at hearings, trials, and settlement conferences before workers' compensation boards and authorities.
  • Analyze claims exposure, evaluate medical and legal issues, and develop cost-effective defense strategies.
  • Collaborate with clients, adjusters, and medical professionals to assess risk, liability, and settlement posture.
  • Manage an active caseload, including case analysis, compliance with statutory deadlines, and litigation strategy.
  • Accurately track and manage billable hours in accordance with firm policies, client guidelines, and industry standards.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in the Virginia Bar or current plans to take the Virginia Bar.
  • 1-5 years of experience in workers' compensation defense.
  • Experience taking depositions, drafting and arguing pretrial motions, working with expert witnesses, and appearing at hearings.
  • Strong academic background with excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Effective legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to manage deadlines and responsibilities independently.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Active membership in the Virginia Bar or plans to take the Virginia Bar.
