Job Overview
A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property practice in New York City. The role focuses on supporting patent prosecution and intellectual property strategy, particularly in the life sciences sector. The position involves working closely with attorneys and clients on patent matters related to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, while contributing to patent portfolio management and intellectual property due diligence efforts.

Duties

• Evaluate the patentability of new technologies and scientific innovations
• Draft and file United States patent applications
• Manage and prosecute patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office
• Coordinate with foreign counsel on international patent prosecution matters
• Support intellectual property due diligence projects and portfolio management initiatives
• Conduct legal and technical research related to patent and intellectual property issues
• Collaborate with attorneys, clients, and internal teams on intellectual property strategy
• Serve as a liaison for cross-departmental initiatives and interact with outside counsel when necessary

Requirements

• At least 4 years of experience drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications in a law firm or corporate environment
• Experience with patent matters related to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices
• Strong scientific and technical background with the ability to analyze research and innovation for patentability
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively
• Experience using patent research databases and scientific search tools

Education and Certifications

• PhD in a life sciences discipline
• Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office or eligible to sit for the Patent Bar examination
