Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Privacy Counsel in Albany, NY. This role involves working closely with the Legal Risk Management team to serve as the firm's subject-matter expert on privacy-related issues. The position includes overseeing privacy policies, advising on compliance with U.S. and international privacy laws, and guiding the firm in mitigating privacy and data-handling risks.

Duties

  • Serve as the primary contact for privacy-related issues, including HIPAA, CCPA, and GDPR.
  • Review, negotiate, and draft privacy provisions in various agreements.
  • Manage client-driven information security and data privacy assessments.
  • Identify privacy risks and develop corrective action plans.
  • Oversee the firm's privacy program and ensure compliance with data retention standards.
  • Support HR with privacy considerations related to personal data.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments and support audits and data incident responses.
  • Advise on privacy risks associated with new tools and technologies.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in good standing.
  • Professional memberships or certifications in privacy preferred.
  • At least 5-6 years of dedicated privacy experience.
  • Experience with U.S. and international privacy laws.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating privacy provisions.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

Certifications

  • Active bar membership.
  • Privacy certifications (e.g., CIPP/US, CIPP/E) preferred.
