A law firm in Portland, Oregon, is seeking a Patent Attorney with a strong background in patent prosecution and technical expertise. The ideal candidate will be a USPTO-licensed patent attorney with at least 3 years of experience. Preferred candidates will have a technical background in electrical engineering, fiber optic communications, and/or encryption/security. The role requires expertise in patent law, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively with clients and colleagues.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Conduct patentability analyses and freedom-to-operate opinions for clients.
  • Develop and execute strategies for patent portfolio management and enforcement.
  • Perform prior art searches and analysis to support patent applications and litigation.
  • Draft and review patent claims, specifications, and responses to office actions.
  • Provide technical and legal advice to clients on patent-related matters, including patent prosecution and litigation.
  • Collaborate with clients, technical experts, and colleagues to understand and address complex patent issues.
  • Monitor and stay updated on changes in patent law and related technologies.
  • Participate in client meetings, presentations, and negotiations as needed.

Requirements:

  • USPTO license required.
  • At least 3 years of patent prosecution experience is preferred.
  • Technical background in electrical engineering, fiber optic communications, and/or encryption/security is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple cases and meet deadlines.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • USPTO license to practice as a patent attorney.

Skills:

  • Expertise in patent prosecution and patent law.
  • In-depth technical knowledge in electrical engineering, fiber optic communications, and/or encryption/security.
  • Proficiency in drafting and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent client management and interpersonal skills.​
