Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent specializing in biomedical devices for its offices in California and New York. The ideal candidate will have over three years of experience in patent prosecution and a background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related medical device technology.

Duties

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
  • Investigate technologies and discuss scientific aspects with clients and inventors.
  • Identify and analyze complex patent issues and implement solutions.
  • Act as liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Communicate with staff, clients, and PTO personnel professionally.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks efficiently under time constraints.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and patent prosecution issues.
  • Enter, maintain, and analyze data for reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related field preferred; Master's or PhD in a related field is advantageous.
  • Qualified to sit for the patent bar; preferably licensed to practice before the USPTO.
  • Strong investigative and problem resolution skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of patent documentation drafting and emerging trends.
  • Proficient in research principles, methods, and resources.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, and prosecution docketing systems.
  • Ability to manage confidentiality and ethical responsibilities.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred; advanced degrees are advantageous.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
