Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Prosecution Associate to join its San Diego office. The successful candidate will contribute to the firm's intellectual property practice by supporting clients in securing patent protections for their innovations.

Duties

  • Review invention disclosure documents and conduct invention disclosure meetings.
  • Conduct prior searches, review references, and analyze patentability.
  • Draft patent applications.
  • Review USPTO office actions, formulate response strategies, conduct examiner interviews, and draft and file responses.
  • Manage U.S. and foreign dockets.
  • Analyze patents in connection with due diligence and freedom to operate analyses.

Requirements

  • At least one year of patent prosecution experience in technologies such as hardware, software, database technology, artificial intelligence, wireless, and image or signal processing.
  • Graduated with a JD or LLM from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Must be admitted or eligible for admission in California.
  • USPTO admission is required.
  • Technology background in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering.
  • Prior work experience in a law firm is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of professionalism in engaging with demanding clients.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple competing priorities and responsibilities.
  • Highly organized with extreme attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in team settings.

Education

  • JD or LLM from an ABA-accredited law school.

Certifications

  • USPTO admission.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in patent drafting and prosecution.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
