Job Title: Patent Agent (Biomedical Device)

Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm in Palo Alto, CA, seeks a skilled Patent Agent with a strong foundation in biomedical engineering or closely related fields such as mechanical engineering, material science, or physics. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of patent prosecution experience and demonstrate proficiency in managing intellectual property portfolios related to medical devices and advanced technologies. This role emphasizes a hybrid work environment and offers the opportunity to engage in strategic IP development, innovation protection, and collaborative work with inventors and attorneys.

Duties:

  • Draft and revise patent applications with an emphasis on scientific accuracy and clarity

  • Respond to communications from U.S. and international patent offices concerning scientific matters

  • Assess the technological merits and commercial value of inventions

  • Collaborate directly with inventors to understand innovation details and prepare filings

  • Perform prior art and patentability searches

  • Analyze patent portfolios and assist in due diligence and IP transactions

  • Support inter partes and post-grant review proceedings (PTAB experience is a plus)

  • Track deadlines and maintain prosecution databases

  • Communicate professionally with clients, legal teams, and administrative personnel

  • Maintain awareness of developments in patent law and medical device technologies

  • Participate in ongoing professional development and IP training

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in patent prosecution, with a focus on medical or biomedical technologies

  • Prior involvement in IP transactional work or patent due diligence is preferred

  • Familiarity with U.S. and foreign patent office procedures

  • Experience with portfolio evaluation and strategy

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, physics, or a closely related discipline

  • Advanced degrees (M.S. or Ph.D.) in relevant fields are considered advantageous

Certifications:

  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required

  • Eligibility to sit for the Patent Bar if not already registered

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in scientific and legal contexts

  • Exceptional written and oral communication abilities

  • Comfortable interacting with diverse professionals, including clients, attorneys, and technical staff

  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management capabilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and docketing software

  • Familiarity with legal technology tools and data analysis platforms

  • Committed to confidentiality and ethical compliance in legal matters

Job Location:

  • Palo Alto, CA

  • Hybrid schedule requiring in-office presence at least 60% of the time (three days per week), with the remainder remote
