Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent in the field of Life Sciences to join their Intellectual Property Practice Group. This role is available in multiple locations, including Boston, Chicago, Orange County, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Washington, D.C. The position involves preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, with a hybrid in-office/remote working schedule.

Duties

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO.
  • Perform prior art searches and patentability analysis.
  • Engage in IP due diligence and practice development activities.
  • Prepare substantive client correspondence.
  • Instruct local counsel for foreign filings and Office Actions.
  • Assist in patent clearance studies and opinion projects.
  • Apply advanced concepts in life sciences, focusing on molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry.
  • Analyze scientific documents to assess patentability, novelty, and inventiveness.
  • Convert provisional applications into utility applications and manage international filings.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience as a practicing patent agent in life sciences or two years of professional experience in the field.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Excellent writing and research abilities.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Education

  • An advanced degree (master's or PhD) in a biological field such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, or Biomedical Engineering.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

  • Advanced understanding of life sciences, particularly molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Benefits

  • Law school tuition reimbursement program.
  • Comprehensive medical, financial, and other benefits.
  • 401(k) eligibility.
  • Various paid time off benefits, including vacation, sick time, and parental leave.

One of DC's most powerful firms is this one. Truly an international giant in every sense of the word, business and finance, M&A, labor law and litigation reign supreme here although the IP practice is coming into its own also. Like many other large firms attrition is high at times, but overall the associates here are well-credentialed and well paid. In DC, this firm's litigation section, especially with respect to technology and intellectual property disputes, tops the list in terms of prestige. However, this is one of the few firms that virtually guarantees great work and top-notch training, regardless of the practice area.

Your information will not be forwarded to any employers at this time. A recruiter will contact you with more information once our internal review of your resume is completed.
