Job Overview: A growing criminal defense law firm is seeking a passionate and experienced Criminal Defense Attorney to join its team. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex criminal cases, including serious offenses such as sex crimes, DUI/OUI charges, domestic violence, drug trafficking, and financial crimes. The ideal candidate will have significant courtroom experience, including handling jury trials, evidentiary hearings, and contested bail hearings. Location:

Duties:

  • Represent clients in serious criminal cases, including jury trials, motions to suppress, and other contested hearings
  • Advise clients on legal rights and strategies for criminal defense
  • Draft and file legal documents such as motions, briefs, and pleadings
  • Conduct complex defense investigations, gather evidence, and work with expert witnesses
  • Handle negotiations with prosecutors and represent clients in plea discussions
  • Appear in court for hearings, trials, and other criminal proceedings
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to refine trial skills and stay up to date with criminal law trends
  • Work collaboratively with legal assistants, paralegals, and support staff

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience handling criminal defense cases, including jury trials and contested hearings
  • Proven ability to handle high-stress, high-leverage situations
  • Strong legal research and advocacy skills
  • Prior experience working with expert witnesses and conducting evidentiary hearings
  • Ability to manage multiple clients and caseloads simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with clients in high-pressure situations

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the state of Maine, or eligibility for admission
