It is a meritocracy where intelligence and hard work are valued and rewarded. During my time here, the partners have done a great job in fostering a very collegial work environment. The firm hires from a highly talented pool of applicants and is extremely selective both in qualifications and in personality (no doubt this is partly in response to getting burned by some personnel decisions shortly after the firm was founded). Because of this, the attorneys at Cheng Cohen are top notch and personable. The firm's clients run the gamut of startups to multi-national corporations. The work is challenging, sophisticated, and fast-paced. Both the partners and the firm itself are well-known and respected in the franchise industry. In addition, there are extra perks like free lunch, good benefits, casual dress, and cool office space. The firm's employees are very diverse, creating a fun and unique atmosphere, particularly for a law firm. Finally, associates are given unparalleled resources and support (including financial) to network, build business, write, and take on leadership roles in the franchise community.ConsWhile Cheng Cohen is a small firm, it has large firm clients—and the corresponding large firm expectations. The firm does not have a billable hour requirement, but it is demanding in terms of responsiveness, work product, and work load. That being said, the partners have the same high expectations of themselves and do not create work for work's sake or give false deadlines. I have also found the firm to be accommodating of vacation and sick days and understanding of family emergencies.
