Pros: 5.0 Former Employee, more than 3 yearsGreat substantive workAssociate in Cambridge, MA ProsExcellent substantive work. Partners provided constructive input and learning opportunities. I had significant interactions with clients and succeeded in developing more business.Excellent docketing and foreign filing groups. Good infrastructure.ConsThey did not encourage and pay the best assistants enough; many departed to other employers. The lost time I spent correcting errors of incompetent assistants could have brought in another ~50-100K per year over multiple years; other associates had similar experiences. Monetary aspects of business development/origination practices were not explained to us. Bonuses were discretionary and dependent on realization (that sometimes was low only because partners agreed with clients to do work on unrealistically low budgets or because of need to correct errors by assistants).Advice to ManagementProvide much more encouragement and better pay to high performing assistants. Consider providing incentives (even small ones) to associates for business development, including development of additional business with existing clients. Be completely transparent about partnership requirements, partnership commitments, BD/origination, and all aspects of billing and compensation.
