If you're off track, it means you're not working. Going in-house is a job; once you get a job in-house, you work for a specific company that can help you.
One of the things I would say about in-house jobs is that it's very beneficial to go into an in-house job in a particular industry that matches what you do.
For example, if you work for a software service SAS company in-house, then you could potentially work for another software services company in-house, or if you work for a hospital in-house.
Then, you can work for another hospital in-house. So getting exposed to a particular industry, if you go in-house, can help your career and help you do very well.
