To Become The Best, Be The Best Listener
[00:00:00] Whenever I have a setback, I often try to evaluate what went wrong and improve on it. What do you think about trying to learn from your successes or the mistakes of others, especially in a law firm and you see your colleagues quit or get no offers during the summer?
Yeah, that's a great question. Early in my career, when I was younger, I was a student of Tony Robbins.
I worked with him for awhile professionally. He talks about something called modeling. You basically watch what successful people are doing and you and you learn from it and you should watch what successful people are doing in every from, or employer your with. You have to learn from the mistakes of others and every environment will show you where the mistakes lie.
He has a book called unlimited power, which talks about that. He wrote it when he was maybe 20 it's probably 30 years old now. He talks about modeling. I would read about that.
The other thing I think that you can learn is, the best people are the best listeners. The smartest students are typically the best listeners. I noticed that when I started in the legal placement in this business, I used to hire, I still do, a lot of people from Harvard, Stanford and Yale law schools, and they would come work here. I always [00:01:00] noticed that that these people that were really good students compared to a lot of other people and we're very good listeners. They just asked a lot of questions and listened and I think that's a sign that people are smart. It's a sign of people are smart academically. But, I also think it's a sign of people that are smart socially, because if you listen and you watch, then you'll learn. And so, I believe that you, staying back and and not getting involved in things can help.
Another funny thing that happened. I was in this thing in college and and then when it came time to nominate someone to be president, the person that ultimately got the position was the one that had never upset anyone.
Everyone else had been taking sides and arguments and stuff. And, this person always just sat on the sidelines. I thought that was interesting.
