In this video, Harrison Barnes is looking at an attorney's resume with experience as a real estate lawyer. He advises that in order to be marketable as an attorney, the resume should focus on being in one practice area. The revision should help the attorney's resume to be short and simple. Getting rid of all other experiences helps the reader focus on one area of your practice.
Okay. Let's see this person. We'll do one more. Take another quick break. A court appointed attorney, Steve. Okay. So this is the same thing that I talked about with other attorneys. I would just call myself and one, 2020 it's only been a year. And then this has been persons, had their own. Or worked for a personal injury attorney. Okay, so this person this is again the, kind of the focus issue that we've been talking about for most of the day. And and this person I would like to see the resume become much more focused. And and what I don't know that any of this stuff here. Is relevant to this person has been for a short period of time, only since, it's been doing document review and then doing this court appointed attorney and so forth.
Don't really think any of this is necessary. It detracts from the whole message. And and their experience for the past 14 years has been as a personal injury attorney. I'm assuming that's the majority of what they do. So I'm just going to go here. And then I'm going to say whatever hold on offices personal injury, and then just talk about the type of cases and so forth that had been done personal injury trials, et cetera.
You can go and brought in product, personal injury work.
So you want basically everything to look very focused. And so this person graduated from Moscow in 2006, and they've had this since 2006. Don't like any of this other stuff. I think that pretty much if they've had this position since 2006, I don't think you really want any of this other stuff in there.
It's just not helping you. None of it's helping. And none of this stuff is helping either being a physical therapy aid, doesn't help an internship at Shults performance center and athletic trainer, which kind of sounds cool. But I don't think that helps. So you need to basically beef up this experience here get rid of all these lines and so forth and no call it legal experience, just call it experience.
And then have some information about what you did. With your own practice because all your other positions are in temporary, so you're not temporary, less than, they've been haven't been long-term. So just remember that law firms are looking for people that can do the job long-term likely to stick around.
And here, this is a lot of stability, so that's really good. All these other things Illinois bar foundation, legal aid hotline that's not necessarily If you were named one of the top liars at the national trial lawyers association and this other thing these are education girl.
I'm sorry. Okay. Yeah, so this, these, cause of these lines, it messed everything up, but I would take out this volunteer experience. I would leave this stuff up that national being nominated one of the top 100 appliers and then I would beef this up. And then you're right to queer education at the end.
And then and then. Everything else looks great. This is a good resume. It just needs to be, again, it's just everything you had on it before. It was just too confusing and it didn't look focused. So now you can apply for and all sorts of jobs in personal injury firms. If that's pretty much what you were doing, and then you talked about things like brain injury and everything.
And will I think that you can definitely good jobs at firms that do that. Okay, let's see this one. And then we'll take this one and we'll take a quick break again. Okay. Honors. Editor-in-chief okay. Okay. I wouldn't, I don't know that you want to put the just the volume.
I would. If you can just put the here, do your editor-in-chief and okay. Science. Okay. This is good. Okay. Everything's good here. And I don't know that's an honor. I would just say, editor in chief whatever the year, if you can do the year that would be better associate attorney.
Okay. This is good. So landlords MultiPro province. Lost her time. Okay. And make sure you use this associations, residential commercial lease agreements for compliance with local state and federal laws, ordinances to mitigate costs. Okay. Where I'm under contract. Okay. So this person is a real estate attorney.
Basically does real estate agreements and. Real estate litigation. So you have a couple of different ways to go with your your resume this, by the way, it doesn't go at the top. It goes at the bottom. We have more stuff here. These just keep going out there, some of this stuff.
Okay. I hope you guys find this helpful. This is just a lot of stuff here with each of these resumes. It's very interesting to me now. So what I do for a living, but okay. Let's see here. Yes, you have education Rutgers. Okay. And this member, you don't have to say professional. You can just say experience everything's shorter is better.
And then associates, you don't need to say some associate attorney. You just call yourself in associates. So just think, always think about the stuff in the ways you can short things and make things shorter. And you don't say deal with the honor, if you just say government doc no, it's not deal with, but anyway that's fine.
Okay, so you have a couple of different things here. So one is that you're doing leasing. And you're doing community management, like board association management, and then you're you're settling. People leaving and then you're doing contracts, so you need to figure out there's a bunch of different ways this could go.
Honestly what you're doing is more general you're doing, general real estate, transactional and multi-family property, representing landlords Of multi-family properties and so forth. So that's really what you're doing. Which is actually a good job because you have the ability to go work in house for those types of landlords.
You have the ability to work in other firms that do that. So you need to figure out who is a client that you're representing and who is paying your bills. And then once you figure that out, you can make your resume much more focused towards that. And because this is what you're doing.
There's not a lot of people that do I don't like the stuff about the race and larvae because it distracts from it even if it was even if it was like the family law review or the criminal law review or to track for it. But you actually need to look as much as possible like a real estate attorney.
Because that's what you're doing. So again, you have to put people on the scent of that, and you have a couple of different directions where you can go as a real estate attorney, one direction as you can make yourself look like you're transactional the other. And let me just these directions where this is going, sorry, I'll just do it here. Education. Okay.
You can do a transactional real estate. Probably not though. You can do you can do leases or someone to do leases can represent landlords and litigations, right? Possibly Education counseling, maybe you can represent landlords and community association law versus another one.
And and then you can also or you can represent community as such.
So all of these are things that you can do with your background. And these are lots of different skills that you have. And and so these are things that all can be done. With your particular skillset. So that's how I would try to break that down.
Now, if you wanted to do real estate leasing, you would emphasize real estate leasing in your resume. When you're applying for those jobs. If you wanted to do real estate litigation, you would represent the negotiation, the settlements, and so forth with that. If you want her to do collection on real estate, you would do that.
If you wanted to do general representation of community associations, you would represent your interaction with community associations. And then if you wanted to do represent developers that were interested in going after. Real estate or, that needed representation with real estate associations.
You would do that. So that's how you can format that. Or you can have it the way it is and do all three, but if it was me, I think you have a very good chance of getting a job. If you emphasize that now all this other stuff here. I, I just don't I think it's not, you don't want to get into a lot of detailed care.
You don't want to get into a lot of detail here. This is late. Oh, they were saying matters related to real estate and other practice areas go see another practice and other practice areas.
And then yeah, just not just, not at all. Most of this stuff with 2017 graduated. Yeah. Most of this other stuff really isn't that relevant. So I would. Try to take that out. I just don't like it. And I don't even know what this entrepreneur, I would just get it out of there. And then January it judicial interns and then Yeah, all these other internships really aren't that necessary.
Someone is going to hire you with this resume for your real estate related experiences. The thing you need to understand. So the more you. Emphasize your real estate related experience especially with respect to community associations the better off you're going to be. And then all this stuff here just needs to be deemphasized.
So it can, people are looking for a scent. Now, if you do want to do litigation, for example, then you would emphasize the litigation that you're doing at this firm. And then Yeah, take it from there.
