"I worked at some big law firms with the same group of partners for 12 years, but didn't have the bar. I did everything any other attorney would do, but under the supervision of these partners. Now I have the bar, but as a licensed attorney with only five years of experience, how do I address this in the best light?"
I think anytime you haven't worked as an attorney, you can just list that you worked in a law firm before anything else. Even though you were doing certain types of work, you do need to be careful. There's a thing called unauthorized practice of law, which, if you were doing the same work as the attorneys, would have been a bad thing. So you need to be careful about that. I would just list that you worked in a law firm on your resume. It's okay to list your law firm experience, even though you weren't an attorney at the time, on your resume. That's fine.
