"Why are law firms reluctant to hire third year students as summer associates?"
The main reason law firms don't want to hire a third-year associate is because they're expected to study for the bar in the third year summer and then they're expecting to start a new job after the bar. So if they're just hiring a summer associate who's a third year, the person's not going to be able to study for the bar.
