Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Life Sciences Patent Agent with over two years of experience to join its Intellectual Property team. The position is available in multiple office locations. Candidates should possess a background in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, DNA sequencing, immunology, or life sciences technology, with advanced degrees preferred.

Duties

  • Prepare draft patent applications incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
  • Discuss scientific aspects of inventions with clients and provide reports to attorneys.
  • Act as liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
  • Advise attorneys on general and specific technologies.
  • Draft, organize, and analyze documents.
  • Conduct regulatory and factual research.
  • Communicate with staff, clients, vendors, and agency personnel.
  • Coordinate workflow with outside service providers.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks under time constraints.
  • Identify and solve complex patent issues.
  • Provide guidance to legal support staff.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and patent prosecution issues.

Requirements

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office preferred.
  • Strong investigative and problem resolution skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Proficiency in using various software packages.
  • Ability to travel as needed for client matters.

Education

  • Background in cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, DNA sequencing, immunology, or life sciences technology; advanced degrees preferred.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office preferred.

Skills

  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings.
  • Knowledge of drafting complex patent documentation.
  • Ability to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Knowledge of time management and project management strategies.
