Job Overview

A law firm seeks a patent agent with expertise in biomedical device technology for its offices in California and New York City. The ideal candidate will have over three years of experience in patent prosecution and a background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related fields. Experience in patent portfolio analysis and IP transactional matters is desired.

Duties

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
  • Investigate technologies and discuss scientific aspects with clients and inventors.
  • Identify and analyze complex patent issues and implement solutions.
  • Act as liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Communicate with staff, clients, and PTO personnel professionally.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks efficiently under time constraints.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and make recommendations.
  • Engage in continuing education to maintain accreditation.
  • Enter, maintain, and analyze data for reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred; Master's or PhD in a related field is advantageous.
  • Qualified to sit for the patent bar; USPTO registration preferred.
  • Strong investigative and problem resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of drafting complex patent documentation.
  • Advanced research principles and methods knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks under time constraints.
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, and prosecution docketing systems.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and ethical responsibilities.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related field preferred.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings.
  • Proficiency in time management software.
