Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Special Education Litigation Attorney in Oakland, CA. The attorney will assist clients in the individualized education program process, present workshops, review and revise policies, and handle compliance complaints and due process hearings related to special education services.

Duties

  • Represent clients in special education due process hearings, mediations, and administrative proceedings.
  • Draft and argue motions, briefs, and appeals in administrative tribunals and state/federal courts.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on emerging special education issues.
  • Participate in resolution sessions, mediations, and settlement negotiations.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Member of the State Bar of California.
  • 4-7 years of experience in litigation, administrative law, education law, or civil rights law.
  • Strong understanding of California statutes.
  • Special education background preferred.
  • Administrative hearing experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience handling administrative hearings or litigation matters.
  • Familiarity with state education agency procedures and administrative tribunals.
  • Strong advocacy and negotiation skills in sensitive, high-stakes matters.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills when working with families, educators, and administrators.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Member of the State Bar of California.
