Senior-Level Affordable Housing Associate Attorney

Job Overview:

A respected law firm based in Houston, TX is actively seeking an experienced legal professional with a deep focus on affordable housing development and finance. This opportunity is ideal for a senior-level associate or counsel seeking a dynamic, client-facing role in a collaborative, high-performing team advising a national clientele. The role centers around structuring and executing complex transactions that support the creation and preservation of affordable housing.

Duties:

  • Advise for-profit and nonprofit developers, investors, and public agencies in real estate and finance transactions related to housing.

  • Lead legal work on low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) projects, including 4% and 9% deals.

  • Negotiate and draft a wide array of transaction documents such as loan agreements, partnership agreements, and development contracts.

  • Oversee due diligence and manage all phases of real estate and financing closings.

  • Interact directly with stakeholders including clients, investors, lenders, and opposing counsel.

  • Identify legal risks and recommend solutions from pre-development through post-closing stages.

  • Take ownership of projects while working in close coordination with cross-functional legal teams.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 6 years of substantive legal experience in affordable housing transactions.

  • Extensive knowledge of affordable housing programs, incentives, and financing mechanisms.

  • Experience in LIHTC transactions, particularly with structuring, syndication, and compliance.

  • Familiarity with acquisitions, dispositions, and exits involving housing finance.

  • Comfortable handling work on behalf of developers, investors, and financial institutions.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school with a strong academic track record.

Certifications:

  • Active license to practice law in the state of Texas (TX Bar admission required).

Skills:

  • Proven ability to manage complex transactions independently.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication abilities.

  • Strong issue-spotting, organizational, and drafting skills.
