Job Overview

A law firm in Austin, TX, seeks a highly skilled and motivated Patent Agent to join their Intellectual Property (IP) team. The ideal candidate will work closely with IP attorneys and clients to draft and prosecute patent applications, conduct patentability assessments, perform patent searches, and assist with various IP-related projects. This role requires a strong mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering background, substantial IP experience, and a collaborative approach in a dynamic law firm environment.

Job Description

Duties

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Assist IP attorneys in representing clients in Patent Office proceedings, patent litigation, and general patent prosecution matters
  • Conduct patentability assessments and third-party patent searches
  • Perform patent diligence for mergers and acquisitions
  • Assist with patent clearance and enforcement projects as needed
  • Collaborate with the IP team on various IP transactional matters
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of patent laws and regulations

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3+ years of intellectual property experience in patent transactional matters
  • Experience in prosecuting patent applications in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering; preference for candidates with additional chemistry or biochemistry experience
  • Well-developed patent database search skills
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering
  • Advanced technical degree preferred

Certifications

  • USPTO registration number required

Skills

  • Substantive academic and professional knowledge in relevant engineering fields
  • Proficiency in patent application drafting and prosecution
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
