Job Overview

A law firm seeks an experienced patent attorney for their life sciences patent practice in Santa Monica, CA. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Cellular & Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or a related field, with at least three years of law firm experience preferred.

Duties

  • Manage client relationships and patent portfolios.
  • Conduct prior art database searches for patentability and freedom to operate analyses.
  • Provide counseling and litigation support.
  • Conduct IP due diligence for financings and corporate deals.
  • Draft patent applications and responses to office actions.
  • Train and mentor junior patent agents and attorneys.
  • Participate in post-grant procedures at the USPTO.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or M.S. with research experience in relevant fields.
  • Experience with medtech, AI, and/or medical/biotech devices is a plus.
  • Superb technical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Broad scientific knowledge in biotechnology.
  • Initiative and ability to work well on disparate teams.
  • Registered with the USPTO as a patent practitioner.

Education

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Cellular & Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related field.

Certifications

  • USPTO registration as a patent practitioner.

Skills

  • Strong client management and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficiency in conducting patentability and freedom to operate analyses.
  • Ability to draft patent applications and office action responses.
  • Experience in training and mentoring junior staff.
