Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Federal Litigation Attorney in Sherman Oaks, California. The attorney will manage a diverse federal litigation docket, including substantial legal writing and research in matters pending in multiple U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, and, when appropriate, petitions for writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court. This role requires excellent analytical judgment, high-volume drafting, and disciplined deadline management.

Duties

  • Manage and advance federal litigation matters from inception through resolution, including case strategy, factual development, and client counseling.
  • Draft and revise high-quality federal pleadings and papers, including complaints, motions, and proposed orders.
  • Conduct rigorous legal research and analysis involving federal statutes, regulations, and constitutional issues.
  • Prepare appellate briefing and related submissions, including notices of appeal and relevant motions practice.
  • Assist with Supreme Court-related work, including research and drafting in support of petitions for writ of certiorari.
  • Oversee and participate in discovery practice, including drafting and responding to written discovery.
  • Coordinate filings in CM/ECF and related systems; ensure compliance with procedural rules and deadlines.
  • Communicate professionally with courts, clients, opposing counsel, and internal team members.
  • Collaborate with paralegals and support staff to maintain organized case files and ensure accurate calendaring.
  • Assist with hearing and trial preparation as needed, including witness/exhibit organization.

Requirements

  • Exceptional legal writing ability with experience producing polished, persuasive briefing on short deadlines.
  • Strong research skills, including comfort with complex federal questions and multi-jurisdictional procedural issues.
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure.
  • Excellent verbal communication, professionalism, and client-service orientation.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Gsuite, and legal research tools; familiarity with PACER/CM/ECF.

Education

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California (or ability to become admitted promptly).

Skills

  • 2+ years of federal litigation experience strongly preferred; appellate experience strongly preferred.
  • Immigration-related federal litigation experience is a plus, but not required if the candidate has strong federal writing and research experience.
