Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent in Cleveland, OH, to apply specialized scientific training in Chemistry to guide chemical innovations through the patenting process. The role involves ensuring that complex scientific discoveries are accurately captured, scientifically protected, and strategically managed.

Duties

  • Prepare and file patent applications for chemically related inventions, including pharmaceuticals, polymers, catalysts, formulations, and analytical methods.
  • Review research and laboratory results to translate highly technical chemical concepts into clear, legally defensible language.
  • Review invention disclosures to assess novelty, utility, and non-obviousness.
  • Conduct prior art searches and evaluate chemical literature, patents, and databases to determine patentability.
  • Respond to office actions from patent examiners, providing scientifically sound and chemically related arguments to overcome rejections.
  • Collaborate with attorneys to develop strategies for protecting chemical innovations.
  • Work closely with inventors, R&D scientists, and legal teams to ensure accurate chemical representation of inventions within the patent application.
  • Communicate complex chemical principles to non-scientific stakeholders in accessible terms.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining intellectual property portfolios for chemical technologies.
  • Provide strategic advice on patent scope, freedom-to-operate, and competitive positioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or closely related field (organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, biochemistry).
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field.

Certifications

  • USPTO registration.

Skills

  • Strong ability to translate complex chemical concepts into clear language.
  • Proficiency in conducting prior art searches and evaluating chemical literature.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying complex principles to non-scientific stakeholders.
