Job Overview

A law firm seeks an associate attorney with 3-7 years of experience in defending workers' compensation and/or insurance defense to join their Overland Park, KS office. Candidates must be licensed in KS and eligible for MO reciprocity via UBE transfer or years of experience.

Duties

  • Gather and review medical evidence and records.
  • Take depositions of claimants, physicians, and experts.
  • Conduct discovery and perform legal research.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Litigate cases before a workers' compensation judge.
  • Represent employer or insurer at various proceedings.
  • Communicate with claims representatives.
  • Monitor loss run reports and alert management to concerns.
  • Assist with accident investigations.
  • Manage workers' compensation costs.
  • Compile and submit management reports.
  • Coordinate and attend claims reviews.
  • Negotiate settlements on behalf of the insurance company/employer.

Requirements

  • J.D. and licensed in MO and KS or reciprocity required.
  • Proven experience in workers' compensation defense work.
  • Knowledge of legal principles and practices.
  • Understanding of local, state, and federal laws.
  • Familiarity with legal research techniques and terminology.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word; Time Matters preferred.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and research skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent telephone and writing skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain firm and client confidentiality.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.)

Certifications

  • Licensed in KS and MO or eligible for reciprocity
