Job Overview:
A law firm seeks an experienced insurance coverage attorney to join its Chicago-based practice. This role involves overseeing complex insurance coverage litigation, mentoring junior attorneys, and directly managing cases from inception to resolution. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of first-party insurance matters, particularly property insurance, and is adept at litigation strategy, depositions, and policy analysis.

Duties:

  • Lead and manage an active insurance coverage practice, handling cases across the Midwest.

  • Supervise and mentor junior associates on assigned matters.

  • Oversee and execute litigation strategies in coverage matters, including both defense and prosecution of claims.

  • Conduct depositions, including 30(b)(6) depositions, and examine insureds, public adjusters, engineers, and contractors.

  • Perform examinations under oath and draft comprehensive legal opinions on coverage issues for clients.

  • Manage coverage and extracontractual liability cases in both state and federal courts.

  • Advise claims professionals and in-house counsel on property insurance appraisals and related legal issues.

Requirements:

  • Active law license in Illinois and admission to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (or eligibility for admission to other applicable federal courts).

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience handling first-party insurance coverage matters.

  • Strong research, analytical, and litigation skills.

  • Proven ability to manage files, oversee junior attorneys, and directly communicate with clients.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to provide writing samples, including deposition transcripts and legal motions.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in good standing with the Illinois State Bar.

  • Admission to relevant federal district courts preferred.

Skills:

  • Expertise in first-party property insurance law and coverage analysis.

  • Proficiency in conducting depositions, examinations under oath, and courtroom advocacy.

  • Strong case management and leadership abilities.

  • Ability to provide strategic legal counsel on complex coverage issues.

  • Excellent legal research, writing, and negotiation skills.
