The Afton Law office was built in 1984 and roughly resembles the old Afton Depot which was demolished in the early 1960's. Located fifty feet from the center line of the CSX railroad, it adjoins the East Trailhead of the Crozet/Blue Ridge Tunnel which Nelson County is now reopening. The tunnel was built primarily by Irish immigrant labor in the 1850's under the supervision of Claudius Crozet, one of the founders of the Virginia Military Institute. The tunnel was considered then, and now, an engineering marvel, and at the time of its opening, at 4273 feet, was the longest tunnel in America. When work is completed, visitors to the tunnel will be able to hike and bicycle its length to the West Trailhead which lies in Augusta County above Waynesboro on the western slope of the Blue Ridge.
