Lex Africa is a network of leading law firms in twenty-two African countries which was founded in 1993. Only African law firms may join the network and it was the first legal network focussing solely on Africa. Lex Africa members have developed close relationships over the years and regularly meet including at an annual general meeting held in a different African country every year. Lex Africa focuses on general corporate and commercial law as well as litigation and dispute resolution. It has strict membership criteria and a member code of conduct based on best practice and world class standards of legal practice. Members are also required to have a thorough understanding of local business practices, customs, cultures and languages. Each Lex Africa member is an independent law firm but members often work together on cross border and other matters to provide a comprehensive legal service to clients. Lex Africa does not charge referral or other fees to clients. Lex Africa effectively covers the African continent and provides a valuable resource for businessmen and investors in Africa. Africa has many business opportunities and Lex Africa's primary purpose is to provide sound legal advice by reputable legal experts in order to minimise (if not eliminate) risk and maximise benefits from African opportunities." In the broader context of the African Renaissance and NEPAD, lawyers have a role to play in promoting the rule of law and democracy, as well as the harmonisation of business laws between African countries to facilitate trade and investment. Lex Africa plays an important role in developing, promoting and leveraging African professional legal skills in this broader context.
