Martin has practiced law for 36 years, mainly focusing on family and divorce law. He served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from 1982 to 1988, and on reserve duty until 2001, at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served in the Peace Corps in Paraguay from 2005 to 2007, working with small businesses, teaching English to adults and working with a shelter for children.
