About Law Office of Robert D. Ahlgren and Associates

Robert D. Ahlgren is the founding shareholder of the Law Office of Robert D. Ahlgren and Associates, focusing on immigration law, since 1973. He worked in the usual areas of consumer fraud, bankruptcy, wage abuses, domestic relations, and landlord/tenant issues from both sides. Much of what he and fellow Legal Aid lawyers did was rigorous, pioneering work, basic education, and fundamental organizing. During his time working at Neighborhood Legal Services in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, he taught a seminar at Chicago-Kent College of Law (now part of the Illinois Institute of Technology). Mr. Ahlgren appeared on WCIU TV Channel 26 (broadcast in Chicago, Illinois; Gary, Indiana; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin) for 23 years as the attorney who answered live call-in questions on a weekly Spanish-language public service program called "Ayuda". The principal objective of this legal component of the show was to inform the public of their legal rights.

Mr. Ahlgren was a member of the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA)'s Section Council on Immigration and International Law from 1983 to 1990, serving as Chair from 1988 to 1989. Through the years, Mr. Ahlgren has presented at ISBA Mid-year Meetings, the ISBA part of the World Trade Law and Ed Series, ISBA Solo and Small Firm COnferences, and other ISBA meetings.

Mr. Ahlgren has also worked on Chicago Bar Association committees, including the Criminal Law Committee, the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, and the Committee on Immigration and Nationality Law, serving as Chairperson of the latter in 1980. Mr. Ahlgren was also a board member of the Traveler's Aid and Immigrant Service League of Chicago, now known as the National Immigration Justice Center.

Mr. Ahlgren has been a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) since 1973, serving on the Executive Board of AILA's Chicago Chapter from 1977 to 1982, including as President (now called Chair) from 1981 to 1982. He served on the AILA National Board of Governors for 9 years thereafter. He is a frequent presenter at AILA regional and national conferences, as well as an author of many articles on immigration topics.

For a number of years, Mr. Ahlgren has been selected through peer recommendation for the Leading Lawyers Network, Best Lawyers, National Registry, and recently, U.S. News and World Report's Best Law Firms in Illinois.
