About Tjornehoj & Hack LLC

Tjornehoj & Hack LLC was founded by Jon Tjornehoj in 2007, after concluding five years of practice in the natural resources department of a large Denver law firm. Originally under the name Jonathan D. Tjornehoj, LLC, the firm began as a solo title practice focused on Colorado's Denver-Julesberg Basin and Wyoming's Pinedale Anticline. Jon's practice involved not only rendering title opinions, but also curing title defects over large federal units and conducting stand-up title examination. It was in those early years of digging up documents in the back rooms of Clerk and Recorders' offices and tracking down predecessors in title to execute curative that Jon came to understand title from a landman's perspective. That perspective is instilled in the firm today.

In 2010, Jon was joined by his former colleague, Peter Hack. Peter and Jon had previously worked together for several years on a host of natural resource issues, including public lands litigation and oil and gas transactions. In 2013, the firm formally changed its name to Tjornehoj & Hack LLC.

Expertise from the Ground Up

Tjornehoj & Hack LLC was born out of a mineral title practice focused on oil and gas development in Colorado's Denver-Julesburg basin. Because mineral title examination provides the basic legal foundation for the acquisition and development of energy resources, we developed an intricate understanding of each legal phase of the energy development process. As we expanded, our clients called on our firm for assistance in transactional, compliance and litigation matters. From exploration and initial test wells, through full-field development, secondary recovery and asset transfer, our mission is to partner with clients and seek out resourceful solutions to the challenge at hand. We assist clients in maximizing the opportunities presented by energy development in the modern setting. We are proud of the excellent work we are a part of on projects throughout Colorado, Wyoming and North Dakota, assisting clients in reaching their goals in the Denver-Julesberg Basin, the Bakken Field, the Piceance Basin, the Powder River Basin, and beyond.

Energy for Today and Tomorrow

Our firm is rooted in the Rocky Mountain west and we believe that mineral development is an intricate part of our community's past and future. Mineral and land owners play key roles in that development. Application of new technologies has brought renewed economic prosperity to Colorado, Wyoming and North Dakota. Through good times and bad, mineral and land owners need flexible tools to manage the present and plan for the future. Our estate planning practice helps mineral and land owners realize their goals for this generation and next. We are proud to be a part of making that opportunity a reality.

Total Team Engagement

From the start, our firm has sought to bring a new approach to engagement with our clients. We believe that winning solutions are best found by engaging with our clients in a team effort. No one understands your plans better than you do and by working closely together we can address the legal requirements for success. We also believe that a variety of perspectives brings the best solutions to the fore. Behind the scenes on each project we bring the collective knowledge of our full team to bear on the difficult issues confronted by our clients. That collaborative, multi-faceted approach makes for efficient and high quality legal advice.

Pragmatic Solutions

Every client is unique. Our lawyers understand that we best serve our clients when we appreciate their individual circumstances and tailor our advice to fit the situation. We excel at defining how things can be done best in the real world. On each project and for each client we strive to find the legal solutions the meet the economic realities and the on-the-ground facts of the situation at hand. We have the tools and the experience to help you find not just an answer, but the one that works best.

We seek real-life solutions for our clients. Especially in our title practice, our goal is to structure our title comments and requirements in a way that enables the in-house landman to better accomplish the task at hand. We don't simply repeat the rule and let our client figure out what to do with it-we strive to provide practical guidance on how to cure title defects and manage risk.
