Firm History
Attorneys at John W. Lawit began practicing immigration law in 1980. Over the course of 40 years, John and his staff successfully assisted tens of thousands of clients through the immigration process. The firm has helped clients from nearly every country in the world with issues across the full spectrum of immigration law. The firm has not only represented individuals but also helped entire families, small businesses and some of the state's largest institutions and corporations.

John W. Lawit is an attorney in Irving, Texas, where he practices immigration law with John W. Lawit. He has been devoted to the field for more than 40 years and represents clients before DHS and consulates throughout the world. He has contributed extensively to the field of immigration law, authoring New Mexico's Immigration and Nationality Law Practice Act as well as serving on the New Mexico Border Commission.

After graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Mexico, Mr. Lawit earned his Juris Doctor from the University of New Hampshire School of Law. From 1983 to 1988, he taught immigration law at the University of New Mexico School of Law and Texas Tech University School of Law as an adjunct professor. He was appointed to be a U.S. immigration judge. Mr. Lawit is admitted to practice law in Texas, New Mexico and Pennsylvania, and he is also a former member of the Canadian Bar Association.

Mr. Lawit has chaired the Immigration Law Section of the State Bar of New Mexico and is active in establishing the Immigration Section of the Dallas Bar Association. John is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. He has served on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico. And in 2009 he joined The Law Society of British Columbia as a foreign legal consultant.

Mr. Lawit gives his time to several internationally oriented community organizations including Human Rights Initiative of North Texas (HRI), Healing the Children and the Institute for Spanish Arts. He has won awards for providing immigration assistance to Catholic Social Services and Jewish Family Services of New Mexico in Albuquerque. A frequent speaker at immigration law conferences, Mr. Lawit has received an AV Preeminent* peer review rating through Martindale-Hubbell and is also listed in Best Lawyers in America**.
