WSP solicitors is the result of the merger of three local firms: Winterbothams, A E Smith & Son and Penleys, who have been practising law in Stroud, Nailsworth and Dursley for over 200 years. Winterbothams was set up by Lindsey William Winterbotham in 1848 in No. 5 Rowcroft. He died in 1884 and was succeeded by his son. In 1932 it became known as Winterbotham & Gadsden, but the Winterbotham family connection continued until the death of Frederick Winterbotham in 1940. After the Second World War they amalgamated with Ball, Smith & Playne of Kendrick Street, an even older firm, and became Winterbotham, Ball & Gadsden, reverting back to Winterbothams in 1985.
