About Botkin & Hall, LLP

In 1895, George J. Oltsch set up his law office in South Bend, Indiana. His first patent was issued for a horse collar pad on February 23, 1897 under registration number 577,465. George became successful and hired a young lawyer, Eugene (Gene) Knoblock, whom he began to teach how to practice law. He also taught Gene that, in order to succeed, he must provide top-notch service to his clients. George explained that top-notch service means meeting the client's needs through providing competent and timely representation and advice, as well as anticipating a client's problems and offering solutions useful to a client's success.

Gene was issued his first patent on October 20, 1936. The firm of Oltsch and Knoblock continued to prosper, and when George Oltsch ultimately retired, he passed the firm's reigns to Gene. Knoblock hired another lawyer, James David Hall, a Purdue graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering.

James David Hall was fresh from the Navy's JAG Office but his naval experience had certainly not prepared him for a career in intellectual property. Gene quickly became Jim's mentor and filled in the gaps; as a result, Jim's first patent was issued on November 1, 1968. The firm eventually became known as Oltsch, Knoblock and Hall, and the legacy of the firm's approach to service was once again passed on to the next generation. That legacy continues to this day.

Though the focus of the firm has expanded and its name has changed, the lawyers at Botkin & Hall, LLP continue to build on the efforts and successes of Oltsch, Knoblock and Hall. The faces have changed over the last 100 years, but the mission of the lawyers at Botkin & Hall, LLP is the same - to provide competent and timely representation and advice, as well as anticipating a client's problems and offering solutions useful to a client's success.

The services now provided by our firm begin with our roots in intellectual property and have expanded to include a full menu of services related to the needs of twenty-first century inventors, entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial businesses, and essentially anyone who is in need of the top-notch service we always aim to provide.
