C. Donald Swartz and William T. Campbell worked together as young law clerks in Philadelphia. In 1921, they decided to form their own practice. The small firm grew as the skills and abilities of the two young lawyers were recognized in the legal community. The partnership was expanded with the addition of Ward Henry, a solo practitioner. Swartz, Campbell & Henry continued to grow and prosper, with offices located in the Lincoln Liberty Building (now the PNB Building) at Broad & Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia. With the retirement of Ward Henry, a bright and energetic trial lawyer, Lynn L. Detweiler, joined the firm. The name of the firm was changed to Swartz, Campbell & Detweiler. The firm was soon to become one of the pre-eminent insurance defense firms in Philadelphia. Gradually, the firm grew, expanding its practice as new areas of litigation would develop. Lawyers with worker's compensation expertise came to be known statewide for their experience and skills as new areas of litigation developed. Products liability and medical malpractice became important parts of the firm's litigation defense practice. Motor vehicle and transportation departments expanded and grew and professional liability groups were established and flourished. In the 1990s, with the continued explosion of litigation in the United States, Swartz Campbell expanded its practice on a regional basis. Offices were located throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with additional regional offices being located in New Jersey, Ohio, and Delaware.
