Gedney M. Howe, Jr. (1914-1981)

Gedney M. Howe, Jr., was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on September 4, 1914. He attended the public schools of the city of Charleston, the College of Charleston, and the Law School at the University of South Carolina. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in June of 1937, and practiced law in the city of Charleston from that date until his death in 1981 except for four years while in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was known and respected among the members of the Bar of this State as a "lawyer's lawyer" and a scholar. He was elected Circuit Solicitor of the Ninth Judicial Circuit in 1946 and served without opposition until his resignation in 1956.

He was recognized among the Circuit Judges as the best solicitor in South Carolina, and while he never sought public office again, he remained very active in statewide politics. He was a great trial lawyer.

The Charleston Bar would always crowd into the courtroom to hear him cross-examine a witness or make a jury speech. Jurors loved him, and he always obtained great results. No other lawyer was held in higher esteem at the bar and bench than Gedney M. Howe, Jr.
