State Energy Regulator Joins Steptoe & Johnson
Summary: Steptoe & Johnson welcomed a new partner to the firm’s Energy group in Chicago.
Steptoe Chair Phil West said, “Mark is an energetic, entrepreneurial lawyer who brings a wealth of experience advising some of the country’s largest energy and utility companies on major regulatory issues. His arrival not only expands our Energy Group to the Midwest, but broadens the capabilities we offer clients in state regulatory work.”
Johnson will focus his practice on utility regulation and restructuring, and counseling energy clients on regulatory matters such as performance-based formula ratemaking, energy efficiency, Smart Grid, renewable energy, distributed generation and net metering, clean coal, utility restructuring and competitive market development, energy procurement, municipal aggregation, and financing. He has handled a number of matters before the Illinois Commerce Commission.
Johnson said of his move, “Steptoe has a strong energy regulatory practice with a national platform. But what also attracted me to the firm is its collegial and inclusive environment and culture, which is conducive to growing my practice.”
Johnson has been ranked in Chambers USA and recognized in The Legal 500 and by the Financial Times. He earned his J.D. from the University of Iowa and B.A. from Wheaton College. He currently serves as chair of the Chicago Bar Association Energy Committee and on the board of directors for StreetWise, a Chicago non-profit organization.
