San Diego office of an AmLaw firm seeks molecular biology associate attorney with 3 years of patent prosecution experience. The candidate will work under the supervision and guidance of senior attorneys and partners in our Intellectual Property section and perform a variety of patent-related activities, primarily in the areas of patent prosecution, opinion drafting, freedom to operate analysis, and due diligence work. Will assess scientific literature, patents and patent application documents, each encompassing a variety of biology fields, including cell biology, cancer biology, immunology, genetics, and molecular biology. Understand, critique and provide insightful opinion on scientific data relating to inventions. Draft written assessments of the prospects of obtaining patent protection. Evaluate patent ability. Draft responses to office actions from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other patent offices. Collaborate with colleagues on various projects including assessing patents for corporate due diligence and conducting underlying analysis for opinions and litigations. Handle a variety of patent projects, including patent drafting, prosecution, reexaminations, opinions, litigation support and due diligence. Should have an advanced degree in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, or related biological science. Must have a Ph.D. in biology, molecular biology or a similar degree. Experience with patent drafting and prosecution in fields relating to biology, molecular biology is preferred. USPTO admission or ability to be admitted within one year of hire is essential.

The candidate should be detail oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated scientific writing ability is needed. Demonstrated verbal skills required to communicate scientific concepts effectively to clients, attorneys, and scientists is essential.
