Job Overview: A law firm based in Raleigh, NC, is seeking a highly qualified Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface Patent Agent to join its intellectual property team. This role requires a professional with a strong background in patent preparation and prosecution, specifically in the fields of software, artificial intelligence, IoT, and related technologies. Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications in software-related, AI, IoT, networking, and quantum technologies.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand technical innovations and draft patent claims that effectively protect their inventions.
  • Conduct patentability searches and provide opinions to clients.
  • Advise on intellectual property strategies and portfolio development.
  • Draft detailed patent applications, ensuring compliance with the USPTO's requirements.
  • Manage patent prosecution timelines and maintain communication with the USPTO and clients.
  • Work closely with engineers, inventors, and external stakeholders to understand the technical aspects of innovations.
  • Analyze office actions from the USPTO and prepare detailed responses.
  • Conduct due diligence on patents and technology for mergers, acquisitions, and licensing opportunities.
  • Stay informed about changes in patent law and emerging technologies.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of patent preparation and prosecution experience.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience in one or more of the following fields:
    • Software-related technologies
    • Artificial intelligence technologies
    • Internet of Things (IoT), networking, and related technologies
    • Quantum technologies
  • Proven experience working in a law firm, engineering, or industry environment.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Technical proficiency and ability to quickly grasp new technologies.
