Job Overview:

A prominent law firm is seeking an experienced Associate Attorney to join its Intellectual Property (IP) practice group in Washington, D.C. The successful candidate will play a key role in patent litigation, portfolio development, and business development efforts, especially with Japanese companies. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex patent disputes, licensing, and negotiations in both U.S. federal courts and the International Trade Commission (ITC).

Location:

  • Washington, D.C.

Duties:

  • Research and analyze legal and technical positions for ongoing patent litigation matters in U.S. federal courts and before the International Trade Commission.

  • Advise clients on patent portfolio development and maintenance.

  • Handle complex patent disputes involving consumer products and services.

  • Engage with Japanese companies for business development related to patent litigation and negotiation.

  • Provide support for patent licensing and litigation matters.

  • Assist in developing patent licensing strategies and negotiation tactics.

  • Participate in patent litigation support and settlement negotiations.

  • Collaborate on IP strategy planning in both litigation and in-house settings.

  • Provide expertise in patent engineering, particularly within high-technology environments.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in patent litigation and negotiation support.

  • Experience in U.S. federal courts and before the International Trade Commission.

  • Knowledge of the Japanese patent system, including working with the Japanese Patent Office (JPO).

  • Expertise in negotiating patent licenses with Japanese entities.

  • Experience developing patent licensing strategies, supporting patent litigation, and settlement negotiations.

  • At least 1 year of experience in IP strategy planning in an in-house setting.

  • At least 1 year of experience with patent engineering in a high-technology environment.

  • Must be admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia or another U.S. state or territory.

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Law, Legal Studies, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Admission to practice law in the District of Columbia or another U.S. state or territory.

Skills:

  • Strong research and analytical skills in patent law and litigation.

  • Expertise in patent portfolio development and maintenance.

  • Excellent communication skills for advising clients and engaging with external partners.

  • In-depth knowledge of the Japanese patent system and experience with Japanese entities.

  • Proven experience with patent licensing, settlement negotiations, and litigation support.

  • Strong ability to plan and execute IP strategies in high-technology sectors.
