Job Overview:
A West Hartford, CT-based law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to support a dynamic intellectual property group with a focus on the life sciences sector. Acting on behalf of this firm, the recruiting team is looking for an individual with a strong technical foundation and proven ability in patent preparation, prosecution, and strategy. This position involves working closely with a multi-disciplinary patent team on a diverse array of legal and technical matters related to biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

Duties:

  • Analyze inventions across a wide spectrum of scientific and technical domains to assess patentability

  • Prepare and draft U.S. patent applications tailored to life sciences and related innovations

  • Manage the prosecution of U.S. patent applications and collaborate with foreign representatives for international filings

  • Support patent portfolio strategy and due diligence efforts for transactions or licensing

  • Conduct legal and technical research relevant to intellectual property rights and patent law

  • Collaborate directly with legal professionals, clients, and corporate stakeholders on IP initiatives

  • Act as a bridge between internal departments and outside legal partners to facilitate IP alignment

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience in patent prosecution, preferably within a law firm or in-house legal teams

  • Substantive expertise in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or medical device-related intellectual property

  • Active registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office or a clear pathway to registration

  • Prior exposure to mechanical or electrical patent matters is considered advantageous

  • Strong organizational and communication abilities

  • Comfortable operating in a collaborative, fast-paced legal environment

Education:

  • Doctorate (Ph.D.) in a life sciences-related field (e.g., biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology)

Certifications:

  • U.S. Patent Bar registration or eligibility to sit for the exam in the near term

  • Admission to a State Bar (only required for candidates with J.D. backgrounds; not mandatory for non-attorney applicants)

Skills:

  • Advanced understanding of patent law principles and prosecution practices

  • Technical literacy in relevant biological or chemical technologies

  • Exceptional research and analytical capabilities

  • Ability to synthesize legal and scientific data into strategic insights

  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication
