Job Overview:
A nationally recognized law firm is seeking an Intellectual Property Associate Attorney with 2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution. This is a unique opportunity for a lateral associate to join a collaborative and expanding IP practice with a focus on delivering client-centered, strategic intellectual property counsel. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical background in engineering or computer science and be registered with the USPTO. This recruitment is being conducted on behalf of the firm by a legal recruiting agency.

Location:

  • Boston, MA

Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications

  • Advise clients on intellectual property strategy, patentability, and infringement matters

  • Conduct due diligence investigations related to IP portfolios (optional but valued)

  • Collaborate with inventors, in-house counsel, and technical experts

  • Draft patentability, freedom-to-operate, and validity opinions

  • Support litigation or licensing teams as needed on patent-related matters

  • Stay current on developments in U.S. and international patent law

Requirements:

  • 2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution

  • Solid understanding of U.S. patent procedures and IP portfolio strategy

  • Due diligence experience is a plus

  • Admitted to the USPTO

  • Admitted and in good standing with the Bar in a U.S. jurisdiction where the firm operates

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Undergraduate degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering, or computer science (or a similar technical field)

Certifications:

  • Active USPTO registration (required)

  • State Bar license in good standing in applicable jurisdiction(s)

Skills:

  • Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills

  • Analytical thinking with the ability to convey technical and legal concepts clearly

  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Comfortable managing client communications and deadlines independently

  • Collaborative team player who thrives in a multidisciplinary practice
