A leading law firm located in Chicago, IL, is currently seeking an experienced Intellectual Property Associate with a strong background in software, computer science, electrical, or mechanical engineering. The firm’s Intellectual Property Group focuses on patent preparation, prosecution, clearance opinions, patent estate management, licensing, and patent enforcement for a diverse client base. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work closely with a team of highly skilled patent attorneys in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Duties:

  • Manage multiple legal matters, overseeing both strategic and technical aspects from start to finish.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in areas such as software, computer science, electrical, or mechanical technologies.
  • Provide patentability and clearance opinions, as well as patent estate management services.
  • Assist with licensing, patent enforcement, and litigation support.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail in legal work, ensuring high-quality service to clients.
  • Work independently and manage workloads effectively to meet client and firm expectations.
  • Develop client relationships and generate new business opportunities.
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards in the practice of law.

Requirements:

  • Experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in the fields of software, computer science, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to handle complex legal matters and effectively communicate with both internal and external clients.
  • Proficient in independently managing client matters and making informed decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Willingness to continuously learn and stay updated on advancements in IP law and related technologies.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in one or more jurisdictions.
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Continuing Legal Education (CLE) compliant and able to maintain necessary license renewals.

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of work and handle complex issues independently.
  • Proficient in legal research and use of IP-related technologies.
  • Experience working with or supervising support staff and junior associates.
  • A strong sense of ethics and commitment to maintaining professional standards.
