Bolsters Japan Presence by Absorbing Local Boutique
Global law firm Squire Patton Boggs, the resulting entity of the recent merger between Squire Sanders and Patton Boggs, has expanded and strengthened its presence in Japan and the Asia Pacific by merging with a Tokyo-based corporate boutique. The vitality of the newly formed entity seems unhampered in executing core business strategies as it keeps acquiring new territory, even though its new website is still to go live.
Squire Patton Boggs has tied up with Mamiya Law Offices (MLO) - a five attorney corporate and transactional practice founded in 2008 by Merger & Acquisitions lawyer Jun Mamiya. Mamiya had launched the firm after working as partner in Atsumi & Partners and Hashidate Law Offices. MLO's practice focused on corporate governance, domestic and international transactions, securities, corporate restructuring and other disputes.
The Tokoy office managing partner of Squire Patton Bogs, Ken Kurosu, said, "We have developed a strong relationship with Mamiya-sensei, having first worked together almost 20 years ago." He further added, "Not only do we share a number of major public institutional clients, but there are synergies with our financial services and intellectual property practices in Tokyo, which will lead to new and exciting opportunities in Japan as well as elsewhere around the world."
With MLO joining Squire Patton Boggs the strength of the law firm's existing Tokyo office comes up to 40 lawyers. Squire Sanders had merged with Patton Boggs in June creating Squire Patton Boggs with 1,500 attorneys across 44 offices in 21 countries.
MLO joining Squire Patton Boggs is beneficial for the latter as following the merger between Squire Sanders and Patton Boggs, and number of partners, including London-based shipping partner Linos Choo, had left the firm. Choo rejoined DLA Piper

Squire Patton Boggs, however, has made some key Asia-focused hires following and around its merger. Hiroki Suyama from Pillsbury and Kenji Funahashi from Jones Day
joined its Los Angeles office in June, while the Beijing office of the firm hired competition lawyer Li Hua who left French firm Gide Loyrette Nouel.
