Hewlett-Packard has hired the services of law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld to lobby on its behalf in Washington D.C. The Palo Alto-based computer maker filed papers with Congress in which it mentioned that it was using the services of Akin Gump to advocate on its behalf on “government information technology policy and acquisitions”.

The 2011 Congressional records show that HP spent around $6 million lobbying the federal government. Most of the focus was on data security bills and appropriations legislation with respect to the Department of Defense. The DoD is a major customer for HP. The firm was using its own staff and lobbyists from other firms for advocating its cause. None of the outside firms were law firms.
