Goodwin to Launch First Asian Office in Hong Kong
Boston-based Goodwin Procter has announced plans to build on the firm’s fund formation expertise, venture capital, and private equity by opening its first Asian office in Hong Kong in January. The firm, with seven US offices, believes that an Asian presence will bolster their strengths in key industries and practices

Freshfields reaches out to LGBT students
In an effort to diversify the pool of new legal recruits, prominent UK corporate firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer hosted a pilot social event for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) aspiring lawyers at Cambridge University earlier this week. Corporate law is traditionally seen as a macho and heterosexual environment, so attracting and retaining candidates from a wider range of backgrounds remains an important goal for the firm.

Freshfields will follow this event with another one next Tuesday for students at Oxford University, and then extend the events to other UK universities in 2009.

Bird & Bird profit soars to 30% at Midyear
UK Firm Bird & Bird announced an astounding 30% profit for the first six months of the 2008-09 financial year. Half of the firm’s £85m was accounted for by recent mergers with Lane & Partners and Fennica Attorneys. While the growth has been encouraging, Bird & Bird acknowledges the need to prepare for much tougher economic conditions in the UK and abroad.
