BCG Attorney Search Finds 500 Entry-level Positions Inspite of Market Reports Suggesting Entry-level Hiring in Law Firms Still Flat

February 12, 2013

February 12, 2013 - Pasadena, California - Pasadena based legal recruiter BCG Attorney Search has been able to find 500 entry-level positions (under one year of experience) in law firms across the country. This data from BCG Attorney Search comes just a day after a NALP report suggests that entry-level hiring, especially summer associate hiring, at law firms is flat.

The NALP report says that for the fourth year in a row, law firms have limited their entry-level hiring. The overall headcount at law firms is also far below the pre-recession numbers. NALP is reporting that the recruiting volumes by law firms on college campuses were “mostly flat during the late summer and early fall of 2012 compared with recruiting activity the year before”.

For the class of 2013, who worked as summer associates in 2012, the offer rate for entry-level associates was 90.2 %, a fall of one percent compared to 2011 class which had a 91.4 % offer rate. Summer class sizes continue to remain near recession era levels.

BCG Attorney Search believes that the legal industry will do much better this year compared to 2012 based on the number of attorney openings it has been tasked to fill by its clients.

The legal recruiter is working on filling 3,195 attorney job openings, out of which almost 500 openings are for attorneys with less than a year of experience. The top legal practice areas for jobs in 2013 according to BCG Attorney Search (based on the number of job openings currently with the firm’s clients) are:

Corporate – 762 job openings
IP, tech transactions and patent agents - 729 job openings
