Baker & McKenzie Eyes South Korea
Baker & McKenzie continues its strategy of global expansion with opening a new office in Johannesburg, South Africa, early November, and now applying to Korean authorities for opening an office at Seoul, South Korea. Last week, the law firm announced that it has already drawn up concrete plans for offering its services to Korean clients in an institutionalized manner. After approval from Korean authorities, the new Seoul office would become the law firm's 73rd office counted globally, and its 15th office in the Asia Pacific.
South Korea is one of the most developed nations in the world and has one of the best business climates in Asia. Speaking on the strategy to expand into Seoul, Eduardo Leite, Chairman of Baker & McKenzie's Executive Committee said, "Korean companies have been extraordinarily successful in expanding into international markets, and we look forward to continuing to assist them with their outbound aspirations … After many years of working with Korean clients in many parts of the globe, we will now have the opportunity to service our clients more efficiently and effectively with a base in Seoul. We will continue to invest where our clients need us, and to provide them with the skills and experience they need in areas with the greatest potential for growth."
Echoing Leite's sentiments, Won Lee, the leader of Baker & McKenzie's Korea practice, said, "Korea is a very important market for Baker & McKenzie. We look forward to extending our extensive global capacity to our Korean clients, with the approval of the Korean authorities."
With its opening, the Seoul office would be the sixth new international office opened by Baker & McKenzie in the past 20 months. Other offices opened within this period include offices in Lima, Casablanca, Johannesburg, Istanbul, and Doha.
